     Philippines Wreck Special

When American forces finally halted the Japanese advance during World War Two they went on the offensive, but were forced to fight a gruelling island-by-island campaign.  Every island was contested by the Japanese and defended to the last Japanese life, often holding out  far beyond the breaking point of Western armies until overwhelmed by devastating American firepower and total air superiority.

Keeping their forces supplied required a determined seaborne effort from both sides, but as the Americans advanced the Japanese were forced to pull back their merchant shipping to save them from destruction.

Sometimes the Japanese didn't move their ships far enough.

The Americans found a Japanese supply convoy sheltering in Coron Bay in the Philippines and on 24th September 1944 they ensured the Japanes ships would steam no further and created an extraordinary dive-site.   A dozen merchant ships still lie beneath the waters of Coron Bay.

Our base for the week will be Sangat Resort (www.sangat.ph), and spaces are almost gone!

We'll leave the UK in late November, dates tbc.
